Photos by Rich Stevenson and Deborah Bier, Concord Magazine. A late summer swim at Walden brought an apparition of rocks which seemed to defy gravity. For all their surprising appearance, these anonymous sculptures seemed difficult at times to distinguish from the local ducks who waddled by begging for potato chips and crackers (see below). Passersbys spun astonishing tales as we photographed the stones. "Stand in the middle of the circle and you will be transported to a place where it is always 75 degrees, sunny and breezy," said one man, describing the day at hand. "Hey, it's Waldenhenge!" pronounced another, "With the waters receding due to drought, you never know what artifacts of ancient cultures might be revealed," imagined one woman. "I think the stones help you get perfect cell reception," declared another who also stopped to look. What degree of patience did these figures take to construct? How long have they been there? Who made them? What do they mean? Have others changed them over time? Part of the sweet mystery clinging to these sculptures is that these questions may be difficult to answer...as they well should be.
