Concord will be creating a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) starting this Fall with a training program led by trained first responders from within our community. Residents and workers in Concord are encouraged to take this training.
Our town prepares for everyday emergencies. However, some situations may overwhelm the Town's immediate response capability, so that there could be delays in getting to those who need help. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact our area. The goal is to enable you to offer immediate assistance to family members, neighbors, and workmates while waiting for help, and to do it effectively and efficiently without placing yourself or others in unnecessary danger.
CERTs complement and enhance first-responder capabilities in neighborhoods and workplaces. CERT training includes fire safety, emergency preparedness, team organization, and disaster medical operations. As a trained CERT member, first you help to ensure your own safety and that of your family. Then, you can expand your work outward to your neighborhood or office and beyond, offering help until first-responders arrive. CERTs can also support Town emergency operations in a community shelter, medical reserve teams, and amateur and neighborhood radio teams.
Anyone can benefit from CERT training, as long as you are over 18 years of age and attend the training classes. By taking the training you will gain an understanding of how a CERT functions and how you can help at a time of critical need. Some of what you learn will also be useful for everyday emergencies
CERTs are about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERTs are a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where, as residents or workers, you and your neighbors or co-workers will initially be on your own, and your actions can make all the difference.
