Jazz, Latin, Musical Theatre, Rock: Music on WIQH

By Anthony Dorman, Concord Magazine Staff.

Classic rock. Jazz. Latin. Alternative. Musical theatre. Hip hop. Rap. Techno. The radio station at Concord Carlisle Regional High School, WIQH (88.3 FM), broadcasts a variety of musical styles.

"People may mistakenly think students in high school are interested in only a narrow selection of music," says Ned Roos, WIQH's station manager. "But with dozens of kids involved in the station, there's a big range of tastes and styles." Interspersed with the station's sports, talk, and community shows, music is on the air from 2:30 - 9:30 PM Monday through Friday.

In addition to the wide variety of Rock and Roll shows of every era and type, WIQH broadcasts these music shows:

Soon on WIQH
  • Special Town Meeting will be broadcast in its entirety on January 22nd.

  • Girls' Basketball: January 23 and January 30 @ 5:30 PM; February 9 @ 7:30 PM. Boys' Basketball: February 6 @ 7:30 PM.

Many of the shows mentioned in this article are looking for community sponsors. If you are interested, please phone the station at 978 369-2440.

  • Latin Music with MariaLuisa Plasencia - Maria, a CCHS senior, hosts her show every other Monday from 2:30-4:30 PM (her next show is January 29th). A native of Venezuela, she plays a variety of Latin dance music from salsa to meringue and bachata, with some bilingual pop music mixed in. She says, "Most people don't know Spanish music, so I like to put out all the flavors -- not just what I like -- so they learn more about it." Hoping she will be on her way to Northeastern next year, and then eventually to law school, she is also a seasoned performer of South American cultural dances. In March, she will compete in the "Miss Photogenic Boston" contest.

Jazz with Ben Syversen - This CCHS senior plays jazz for the serious aficionado: music from all modern periods (post 1945/Charlie Parker) and schools of jazz, with a focus on the post-bop and hard-bop era of the 50's and 60's. Hear him every other Wednesday from 2:30-4:30 PM (his next show is on January 24th). Ben first became interested in jazz through playing classical and jazz trumpet. "But as I listened more and more, I began to realize that jazz artists have infinitely more to offer musically than the Beatles," he says.

Musical Theatre with Caitlin McHugh and Steven Wengrovitz - "The Green Room" specializes in the music of Broadway, with some movie musicals mixed in. Hear it every Friday from 6:30-7:30 PM. Musical Theatre is an important part of both these cohosts' lives. Steven says, "Broadway musicals have always been a great part of my life and I hope to share my love of showtunes with all of Concord, Carlisle and BEYOND." Caitlin is "very much involved in the music, drama and dance program at CCHS. It's my entire life. Sometimes my friends and I are at school until 8 or 9 at night rehearsing." The show is seeking donations of Broadway CD's to add to the station's collection. (See the Green Room Website
