
This spring, a front porch hanging pot of petunias just off Monument Square became home to a family of house finches. "We walk by that plant all the time," said Bob Davidson, the self-declared bird landlord who took these photos. "That mama finch couldn't have picked a busier spot to build her nest."
Soon, the nest was filled with five eggs (above). Five eggs gave way to five fuzzy babies (below).
Sadly, one lovely weekend in June, the newly hatched babies disappeared without a trace. There was also no trace of whatever removed or ate them. No broken foliage. No feathers. Nothing disburbed...just no baby birds.
