By all souls made new each day.
Blend our work and joy.
A child's developing self-image is a tender thing to nurture. To this end, Concord art teacher Kristina Joyce combined self-discovery with a self-portrait painting project in her after-school art class. With the above haiku they wrote as a centerpiece for their work, students ages 8-18 created a collage of their finished work (top...click on image for larger view).
Their assignment was to create a series of spiritual self-portraits in the style of some well-known artist. The results are often thought-provoking, touching, humorous...even surprising. Given the students had such varying ages, levels of artistic development, and self-awareness, as a single piece the work holds together well.

(The drawing of a raccoon on the front cover of this issue of the Concord Magazine was made by one these students, Rebecca Morris, for another project in this class. Kristina Joyce and her students' work have been featured previously in this magazine. Email Joyce for information about future children's art classes.)
