Our First Anniversary

By Deborah Bier, editor and publisher of this ezine.

While it is impossible to believe it could have happened so quickly, we are celebrating our first year of publication this month. Our updated masthead is in celebration of this fact.

In the past year we have gone from just-born to regularly read by people all over the planet, used in classrooms, consulted by researchers and journalists, and linked to from sites of many types all over the Internet. This site has also become the envy of surrounding communities, and I have been asked to create similarly rich and substantial sites for some of them. How did we accomplish this magnificent feat in so short a time?

Well, not without the support and contributions of folks both in Concord as well as what I have come to call the "extended Concord Community." This community ranges across several continents and includes writers, graphic artists, visitors, phographers, researchers, adademics, politicians, businesses, adults, children....well, you get the picture. So many all over feel connected to Concord and have reached out to help us shine.

It also took me countless hours of reading, researching, writing, programming, artwork, and editing to create something which, to my knowledge, never existed before: a community-based electronic monthly. During that time, I certainly learned a lot, made a lot of mistakes, too (I hope only a few ever went to "press"), met many fascinating people, and honed my craft.

As a result, I have been gratified by a deepening sense of community this ezine, the Concord Homepage and Concord Discussion List have nurtured. I am enthralled at how effective the Internet is and how much it has helped both me and others feel a more powerful part of what makes Concord tick. I am grateful to have been of service to my community in this way.

So, what's planned for our second year? Well, that's hard to say as a lot of that depends upon YOU. Will you decide to become involved in this project? Write an article? Share your expertise? Lend us your artistic talents? Provide underwriting so we may cover our expenses? If so, then our second year will no doubt be even better than our first.

If you choose not to get involved? Well, I leave that in the hands of each member of our immediate and extended community. I will trust the sense of generosity and warmth I have experienced in this first year will only continue and increase as time goes by.
