At right: Thoreau's cairn at Walden, circa early 1900. Evidence of a tradition, begun by Bronson Alcott and a Mrs. Adams from Dubuque, Iowa in 1872, whereby visitors add a stone to the pile at the shores of Walden Pond to commemorate Thoreau's stay there.
