The Concord Magazine's Second Anniversary

By Deborah Bier, publisher and editor of the Concord Magazine.

March 99
March, 1999
It's that time again: another year has passed and now we are two. It seems such a short time ago we were at the end of our first year and now BAM! We're twice that. I wonder how many human years are equivalent to one ezine year -- if it's seven years for dogs, could it be anything less than 20 for such an ephemeral medium as the Web? I just can't figure out if that's 20 YEARS or 20 MINUTES.

Heartfelt thanks to all the people who made this volunteer publication such a rewarding and wonderful project to work on. Without our volunteers, you would be looking at another Website right now because I would have long ago abandoned the Concord Magazine in favor of what's left of my sanity.

Mentioning everyone who generously gave of their time and talents will make it a sure thing I will offend someone by forgetting them. I nonetheless boldly go on to give special thanks to a few. Leslie Perrin Wilson of the Concord Free Public Library's Special Collections for her writing, advice, permission to use images owned by the Library and her unerring way of putting her hand right on the needed source. Brenda Cerullo has been our proofreader for over a year now, and though we cannot agree on how to form possessives out of words with a terminal 's', she has performed cheerful, steadfast service for us. D. Michael Ryan has also been steadfast with his articles on Concord Colonial history, good humor and devotion to unearthing so-old-it's-new-again information. Richard Stevenson and Donald Stevenson, whose last names seem similar because they are son and father respectively, have lent us countless photographic images, and endless encouragement and advice. And to Donna Cunningham, my co-editor in another Internet publication for all her good electronic company exploring this medium. (Donna lives in Portland, Oregon and simply is amazed by how a small town like Concord ends up being darned fascinating...that's no surprise to us here, of course.)

I just reviewed our issues from the past two years and was really struck by how much the magazine has changed visually. I think this is because the maturity of the 'Net has grown so quickly during that time. So, what looked quite good 8-12 months ago seems kind of klunky and unwieldy now. Of course, it's not that good design has changed over that time -- the basics of aesthetics are fairly unchanging. I think it's more that Internet users' and designers' discernment has matured quickly and I have been sprinting to keep up with it. And we should expect this trend to continue: it is impossible for me to imagine what this ezine will look like in another year.

As I did last year at this time, I invite you to contribute to the Concord Magazine. Whether you live near to, far from, or right in our town, you are a part of our larger community and your writing, artwork, photography, poetry, editorials, etc. would be most appreciated. We are a fun and appreciative bunch to work with and both amateur and professional work is welcome. See our contributors' guidelines for more information.

If you've missed any of our issues in the past year, I have linked each of them on this page to their cover images for your browsing pleasure.
