There Once Was a Lady from Concord...

By the residents of Newbury Court, Concord.

Editor's Note: the following were part of a recent limerick contest held by and for the residents of Newbury Court in Concord.

Concord Limerick Contest

Try your hand at a limerick or other lighthearted poem about Concord. The only rule is that it must contain the word "Concord" -- as in the name of our town -- not "concord" as used to mean peace and harmony, though this word may be used in your poem as well. Use it at least once in your poem. The more about Concord it is, the better.

For some help on how to write a limerick, try this:

What is a limerick, Mother?
It's a form of verse, said brother
In which lines one and two
Rhyme with five when it's through
And three and four rhyme with each other.
(Author unknown)

Our staff will select two winners, and each will receive a Concord Homepage T-shirt as a prize. Poems must be submitted no later than July 1, 2000 and can be sent by snailmail (PO Box 285, Concord, MA 01742) or email. Please include your name and phone number and/or email address.

There was a young lady from Concord
Who became so completely bonkered
She tried to pronounce Thoreau
In the accepted way, you know
But the accent it couldn't be conquered.
John Garrison

There was a young lady from Concord
Who wanted a ride on a skateboard
It didn't go well,
She tottered and fell;
With minimal harm, thank the Lord.
Bob Woodroofe

There was a young lady of Concord
Who her fears of decrepitude conquered
As in pearls and zoot-suited
About Concord she scooted
Crying "Hop it up, Ladies of Concord!"
Mary Soutter

A lady who lived in Concord
Sold the house she couldn't afford
And with her consort
Moved to Newbury Court
Where she found room and board she adored.
Jay Skinner

There was a young lady of Concord
Who sang ta-ta-ta slightly off chord
But Newbury Court
A court order sought
To calm this disgrace to Olde Concorde.
Mary Soutter
