Survival of the Fittest

Story by Aislinn Dewey, performed by Hunter Wells, Kim Ressler, Ariella Haberman, John Owens, Aislinn Dewey, Jon Ford, and Sara Kelleher, Concord Carlisle High School Block B Drama Class Students.

Musketiquid Earth Day 2001This presentation is a children's story written by Aislinn Dewey. To begin their assignment, the group first read and studied several children's books. Some of these books included their personal childhood favorites. Together, they decided on a story-line and characters. Aislinn wrote the final script that revolved around the life of a mosquito named Verdi who encounters several predators in the wet marshlands surrounding Concord. The next step was to make the story come alive, and the group began to practice and think about the blocking, costumes, and set design.

Once upon a time, in a shady misty swamp connected to a pond, lived a mosquito named Verdi. In Verdi's habitat, there were many predators including Sam the bat, Ribbon the spider, Dozer the frog, Sam the man, and Nura the fish. One day when Verdi was flying around the swamp, she found herself particularly bothered by many of her predators. It all started one hot muggy day...

Verdi (to herself): Mmm...that was quite a delicious breakfast I had.

Sam the Man: Ouch! (scratching his arm) It bit me!

Verdi: Hey, stop that! I was just getting some nutrients so that I can be a healthy little insect.

Sam the Man: Darn! I missed it!

Verdi: (fading off) I'm getting out of here!

As Verdi traveled trough the swamp, she unexpectedly ran into a spider web. His left wing seemed to be stuck in it.

Verdi: My wing is caught...Help!...Help!

Ribbon the spider (laughing out loud): Looks like lunch came to me a little early today!

Verdi (struggling to get her wings out): I have to get out of here! Uh...(pulling her wing out).

Ribbon: He's getting away! Shoot!

Verdi (with the final pull to her wing): Yes! I'm free!

Escaping her second predator encounter, Verdi continued on, hoping to make it safely home, say...

Verdi: If I can just cross the river, I'll be home free.

When out jumped a large frog...

oh no! more camera accidentsDozer the frog (trying to catch Verdi): Ribbit...ribbit...ribbit.

Verdi: Oh no, not again...

Dozer: A mosquito is even tastier than a fly!

Verdi (flapping her wings frantically): I think I can fly past him if I try...

Dozer: Oh no, I guess she's too high for me to reach!

Verdi continued on...

Verdi: Only half the river left to cross...

When she caught the eye of a fish...

Nura the fish: These waters sure are slow today. Wait! Here comes an insect over the water surface! (The fish jumps high into the air trying to catch Verdi.)

Nura: Well, I have to survive.

Verdi: Watch out! There's a bird behind you!

Nura: What? Where?

Verdi (giggling nervously): Made you look! See ya...(fading off)

At Verdi's house...
Verdi: Finally, I'm home!

While Verdi returned home safely, she learned she could never avoid the circle of life for it continues on and on.

The End
