"Hooooo-hoo-hoo-hoooo-hoooo-hoooo."
Bubo virginianus (Great Horned Owl)

In Concord, we often hear these owls courting and calling between themselves in the November midnight trees.

According to the National Audubon Society's Field Guide to New England (edited by Concordian Peter Alden), this owl is:

"dark brown with black spots above; underparts pale brown, with heavy dark brown bars; dark streaks on upper chest; facial disk rich rusty brown, ringed with black. Head large; eyes yellow; fluffy ear tufts. Voice: 3-8 deep hoots, 2nd and 3rd rapid and doubled."
