By Kristina Joyce, Concord artist and resident.
The Blue Spruce growing near the flagpole in Concord center is a living tribute to town tree warden Charles F. Myette who died in 1961. In May of that same year, the Inde-Cott Garden Club donated the six-foot evergreen to remember Charlie's planting and preserving of the many beautiful trees along our public ways. Charlie was Concord's own Johnny Appleseed.
Today, the tree in his memory has grown to almost 70-foot maturity. In fact, the town has quite a task to light this tall tree each December when Concord center turns into a magical place to be. For me, the tree is a beacon in the darkness. Watching the tree sparkle in the snow the words of native son Ralph Waldo Emerson remind me to:
"Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year"
