By students of Concord artist Kristina Joyce.
For six weeks this winter, Kristina Joyce's Concord art students aged 8-18 painted and drew Great Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary using watercolor pencils.
Having spent most of this past year studying Australian and New Zealand art and artists like photographer Peter Lik and the Aboriginal watercolor artist Albert Namatjira, the students considered the lesson a "walkabout" in their own "outback."
Incorporating the colors, themes and the drama of Australia's landscape, students interpreted our own Great Meadows with a "Down Under" flair.
Their classes were a multi-sensoral experience. In addition to their art studies, they listened to Maori Songs by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and even baked and ate coconut cookies call ANZACS, named for the famous Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought at Gallipoli. At right, below, and on the cover of this issue is a sampling of their work (click on any image for a larger view).
